UAE-based CE-Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Crescent Enterprises, is investing in Aptadir Therapeutics as the Italian biotech raises USD 45.4 million (EUR 40M)in a seed round.
The Italy-based biotech will use the financing to advance RNA-based treatments for genetic disorders. This includes its lead program for Fragile X Syndrome.
Why You Should Care
The deal brings a MENA-backed investor into a large European biotech financing at an early stage of drug development. It also expands CE-Ventures’ exposure to RNA therapeutics, adding another technology area to its life sciences portfolio.
For Aptadir, the financing provides capital to move its preclinical programs toward clinical development while continuing to build its broader pipeline.
The Details
Aptadir is developing a class of RNA inhibitors called DNMTs Interacting RNAs, or DiRs. These molecules are designed to interfere with abnormal DNA methylation, a process that can silence genes and prevent them from producing proteins.
Its lead program, CAP1-FMR1, targets Fragile X Syndrome. The genetic condition is linked to the silencing of the FMR1 gene, which reduces or eliminates production of FMRP, a protein involved in brain development and function.
Aptadir is seeking to use its technology to reactivate genes that have been silenced through abnormal DNA methylation. The company has tested the approach in patient-derived disease models and plans to apply the platform across additional genetic disorders and oncology programs.
The science behind the platform emerged from research involving scientists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Italian National Research Council, the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore and City of Hope National Medical Center.
The financing will support Aptadir’s next stage of development and its efforts to advance its investigational therapies toward clinical testing.
The Ripple
The transaction brings a UAE corporate venture investor into an Italian biotech financing, adding a cross-border element to the round.
The size of the financing is also notable because Aptadir remains at the preclinical stage. The capital is intended to give the company resources to generate the evidence needed to advance its drug candidates toward clinical development.
For CE-Ventures, the investment broadens its exposure to therapeutic platforms rather than a single drug program. Aptadir is developing its technology across multiple disease areas, including genetic disorders and oncology.
What to Watch
The next key milestone will be Aptadir’s progress toward clinical development. The company still needs to generate further evidence around its platform and lead candidate before human trials can establish whether the approach can translate into a viable treatment.
Investors will also be watching how Aptadir expands its pipeline beyond CAP1-FMR1 and Fragile X Syndrome. The company identifies additional opportunities in genetic disorders and oncology. Thus, making the deployment of the financing and the pace of program development key indicators of what comes next.
