EFG Holding secured a USD 40 million, four-year term loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). This is to expand micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) financing across Egypt.
The four-year facility will support the expansion of EFG Holding’s MSME financing portfolio through eligible non-bank financial institution subsidiaries
Why You Should Care
MSMEs are a large part of Egypt’s private-sector economy, but access to financing remains an important constraint for businesses looking to expand. Additional funding for EFG Holding’s MSME platform could increase the capacity available to businesses seeking capital, particularly beyond Egypt’s main urban centers.
The deal is also notable because it marks EBRD’s first direct financing to EFG Holding at the holding-company level. Until now, EBRD facilities had been extended to individual subsidiaries including Bank NXT, Tanmeyah, and Valu.
The Details
The facility provides four-year funding for EFG Holding’s MSME financing activities across different customer segments and geographies. The financing is intended to support businesses as they invest, scale, and create jobs, with a focus on broader and more sustainable economic activity.
“The four-year tenor provides stable, medium-term funding to support the disciplined growth of our MSME portfolio, enabling our eligible NBFI subsidiaries to expand their activities across different customer segments and geographies,”
The transaction also marks the first time EBRD has provided financing directly to EFG Holding at the holding-company level. EBRD has previously extended facilities to several of the group’s subsidiaries, including Bank NXT, Tanmeyah, and Valu.

The USD 40 million facility will support the growth of EFG Holding’s MSME portfolio through eligible non-bank financial institution subsidiaries. Moreover, for EBRD, the facility is intended to expand economic opportunities for MSMEs, particularly private businesses outside Egypt’s major cities.
The Ripple
The deal extends EBRD’s relationship with EFG Holding from financing individual subsidiaries to a direct facility at the group’s holding-company level.
The financing will also feed into EFG Holding’s broader NBFI platform, which includes businesses serving micro and small enterprises, SMEs, and other customer segments. The focus on businesses outside major cities puts geographic reach among the areas to watch as the facility is deployed.
What to Watch
The key signal will be how EFG Holding deploys the new funding across its eligible NBFI subsidiaries. The facility gives the group a four-year funding base to expand its MSME portfolio across customer segments and geographies, including businesses outside Egypt’s major cities.
Further deployment could show how the financing translates into greater access to capital for MSMEs and supports the expansion of EFG Holding’s financing activities. The facility also sets the stage for a deeper relationship between EBRD and EFG Holding following the first direct financing at the holding-company level.
