Sarat Ventures Targets USD 100M to Invest in 15 to 20 Biotech Companies

Saudi Arabia’s biotechnology investment landscape is gaining another specialized investor, with Sarat Ventures Biotechnology Investment Fund targeting USD 100 million in investments across 15 to 20 companies.

The Saudi-based investment and innovation incubator is targeting Series A and later-stage companies with commercial operations and annual revenues of up to around USD 2 million

Why You Should Care

The fund is targeting companies that have already moved beyond the earliest stages of development, focusing on startups that have reached Series A or later, begun commercial operations and manufacturing, and generated revenue. According to founder Dr. Huda Al Fardous, this approach is intended to create more opportunities for investment exits while limiting exposure to riskier early-stage companies.

For Saudi Arabia’s emerging biotech ecosystem, the strategy also creates a potential channel for international companies to establish operations in the Kingdom while giving Saudi entrepreneurs a route to develop locally and reach overseas markets.

The Details

Sarat Ventures was established in Saudi Arabia and has partnerships with entities in the US and China. The fund is registered in London, a structure Al Fardous said has allowed it to broaden its investment activity both within and outside Saudi Arabia and attract foreign investment.

Its investment strategy centers on biotech companies that have reached Series A or later funding stages and have already started commercial activity, manufacturing, and product sales. The companies targeted by the fund can generate annual revenues of up to approximately USD 2 million.

The fund is designed around a five year investment period. At the end of that period, the fund plans to exit its investments and then reinvest through a second five year cycle at a target size approximately five times larger.

Sarat Ventures is among the early specialized biotechnology investment funds in Saudi Arabia, according to Al Fardous. The team previously worked on establishing a specialized accelerator focused on the sector, giving it experience with both the local market and entrepreneurs.

That experience is also intended to support the fund’s role beyond capital. Al Fardous said Sarat Ventures can help bring companies from outside Saudi Arabia into the Kingdom, while supporting Saudi founders in building companies locally, developing their products, and exporting them to international markets.

The fund also plans to build international partnerships and collaborations as part of this approach.

The Ripple

The fund’s strategy comes as Saudi Arabia’s biotechnology market continues to develop. Al Fardous expects the sector to reach approximately USD 150 billion by 2030, with annual growth of around 13.5%.

If the market continues expanding at that pace, the opportunity extends beyond venture investors to companies seeking a base in Saudi Arabia, local founders developing biotech products, and international partners looking to participate in the Kingdom’s growing biotech ecosystem.

What to Watch

The next signal will be which companies Sarat Ventures backs and how quickly it deploys the targeted USD 100 million. The profile of those investments will show where the fund sees the strongest opportunities within Saudi Arabia’s developing biotech market, particularly among companies that have already demonstrated commercial traction.

The fund’s planned five year cycle and subsequent reinvestment strategy will also provide a longer-term measure of how its portfolio develops and whether successful exits can support a larger second investment cycle.
