The Details

UAE-based holding company Modon Holding unveiled the airport’s architectural design for the first time as construction reaches advanced stages. It is being reported that the triangular terminal structure is largely completed, with most of the steel roof framework installed. Additionally, large sections of aircraft parking aprons and taxiways connecting the runway to the terminal are nearing completion.

The Egyptian government allocated around 1,785 feddans to the Ministry of Civil Aviation for the airport under the Egypt-UAE Ras El Hekma development agreement. Once complete, it will rank among the largest new airport projects currently under construction on Egypt’s northwestern coast.

Orascom Construction is responsible for building the airport as one of the main contractors for the first phase of the Ras El Hekma project. This came after the company signed a framework agreement with Modon Holding to carry out the project’s core construction activities.

The terminal departs from traditional airport architecture. It features an equilateral triangular layout centered around an open-air courtyard designed to maximize natural light and ventilation. Stone colonnades inspired by ancient Egyptian architecture surround the building, while triangular roof openings help reduce heat gain. Aircraft parking aprons will be positioned around the three sides of the terminal. This is to improve operational efficiency by shortening taxiing distances.

The project will also benefit from Abu Dhabi Airports’ involvement. It will support the airport’s planning, design, development, operational readiness, and management under a memorandum of understanding with Modon Holding. The company brings experience from operating Zayed International Airport and several other airports across the UAE.

The airport is one component of a broader infrastructure strategy. This includes modern highways, high-speed rail, a global seaport, and a large marina. This aims to support Ras El Hekma’s long-term economic ambitions.

The objective is to transform Ras El Hekma into a world-class coastal city capable of competing with the Mediterranean’s tourism and investment destinations. Moreover, the airport will place nearly half of the world’s population within a four-hour flight of the new city. 

Improved international connectivity could strengthen the North Coast’s attractiveness for hospitality, real estate, logistics, and foreign investment. It is also supporting year-round economic activity beyond seasonal tourism.
