Morocco
What is happening? Morocco launched the Digital Morocco 2030 plan involving an investment of USD 1.1 billion in the data center sector. This investment aims to boost technology infrastructure and enhance Morocco’s digital landscape. It also aims to improve online services and create more tech jobs.
This is detailed in a report titled “Africa Data Center Market Landscape 2025-2030” posted on GlobeNewswire.
The strategy is led by the Moroccan Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform. It aims to digitize all administrative services through a unified portal. Furthermore, it aims to reduce processing times, and enhance transparency between citizens and government bodies, according to the Moroccan outlet Al Aomk.
How will they support this? This is in reliance on the Hassan II Fund, and the Industrial and Investment Development Fund. It also relies on the Casablanca Finance City Authority, and the provision of industrial acceleration zones built to international standards.
Data Centers
Why does this matter? Analysts expect Morocco’s data center sector to grow over 80% by 2028, as reported by Alomk. In addition, foreign investment is set to climb from USD 27 million in 2022 to USD 51 million by 2028, with an annual growth rate projected at 11.18%.
As a whole Africa’s data center sector is witnessing a boom with a value of approximately USD 3.49 billion in 2024. Furthermore, this is with projections to surpass USD 6.81 billion by 2030.
What is the purpose? The aim is to attract digital investors through the development of telecommunications and fiber-optic infrastructure. This comes amid Africa experiencing a boom in the data center market.
In addition, it aims to meet the demand of digitization, cloud storage and artificial intelligence services.
Sustainability The report details that data centers across Africa and Morocco seek to adopt sustainable environmental solutions. This includes generators powered by treated vegetable oil, lithium-ion batteries, and advanced liquid cooling systems. Furthermore, this is to address the heat generated by data processing, especially as AI applications and 5G networks expand.
