  • The initiative supports plans to improve quality, expand capacity, and accommodate rising tourism demand as Egypt targets 30 million visitors.
  • Hurghada Airport is the first PPP offering due to its high traffic levels, strong tourism demand, and significant economic role.

Hurghada Airport

Egypt’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has officially announced the opening of the application process for alliances and interested companies for the tender to select a strategic partner for the management, operation, and development of Hurghada International Airport.

This program is part of Egypt’s strategy to enhance the role of the private sector in managing and operating airports. This strategy aims to improve the service quality compatible with the latest global standards and technologies. It is also a step towards implementing the offering program launched by the Egyptian government in June 2023, supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The objective of the program is to enhance service efficiency for travelers and accommodate the growing increase in travel and tourism traffic. Additionally, it aligns with Egypt’s goal to increase the number of tourists to 30 million tourists.

Air Traffic

The Minister of Civil Aviation, Dr. Sameh Elhefny, stated that selecting Hurghada International Airport as the first stage of the offering program is due to it being the second busiest airport in the country.  It is the second busiest in terms of air traffic, as well as being one of the most important airports in Egypt for receiving international tourist traffic.

Minister Elhefny emphasized that the private-sector partnership for developing Hurghada International Airport aims to enhance operational performance. It also aims to elevate the level of services provided to passengers. This is while ensuring full state ownership of the assets and limiting the partner’s role to development and operation.
