  • The funding will scale eight mini-grid projects, bringing affordable, sustainable energy to underserved communities.
  • Hydrobox’s IoT-powered grids innovate rural electrification, blending technology and clean energy for lasting impact.

Hydrobox Goes Big on Hydro Power

Kenyan energy startup Hydrobox has just made waves by securing USD 9 million in debt financing from FMO, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank. This capital infusion is a game-changer, enabling Hydrobox to scale its hydro-powered mini-grid projects across Kenya.

Hydrobox specializes in building small-scale hydroelectric plants equipped with IoT technology to optimize performance and reliability. Their model offers affordable, sustainable energy to rural and underserved areas.

“With strong partners on board and a substantial pipeline of upcoming projects in Kenya and the DRC, we are well-positioned to make a meaningful impact on energy access across Africa.”

Thomas Poelmans, Hydrobox CEO and Co-Founder

The USD 9 million will fund eight hydro-powered mini-grids, part of Hydrobox’s mission to electrify remote Kenyan communities. With a strong focus on scalability, the startup is turning Kenya’s abundant water resources into a tool for transformation.

Turning the Tide in Rural Energy

Kenya’s energy landscape is evolving rapidly, but rural electrification remains a challenge. Only 50% of rural Kenyans have reliable access to electricity, according to the World Bank.

Hydrobox’s innovative mini-grids tackle this head-on, disrupting the traditional grid system with a decentralized, sustainable alternative.

Hydrobox’s IoT-driven approach sets it apart. By monitoring and managing grids in real-time, they reduce downtime and maximize efficiency.

These efforts align with Kenya’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes renewable energy and universal access to electricity.

Additionally, Hydrobox has a proven track record, with existing projects powering over 10,000 homes and small businesses. This USD 9 million boost will not only expand their reach but also strengthen Kenya’s position as a leader in green energy.

Powering Progress, One Grid at a Time

Hydrobox isn’t just lighting up homes—it’s sparking opportunities. Access to affordable electricity transforms communities by enabling education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. Small businesses thrive with reliable power, while families enjoy safer, healthier living conditions.

By combining hydroelectric power with IoT innovation, Hydrobox is setting the stage for a sustainable energy future.

As these mini-grids expand, Kenya becomes a blueprint for other African nations aiming to bridge the energy gap. The ripple effect? A brighter, more connected continent powered by clean energy.
