Grand Egyptian Museum

Emulating the allure of Egypt’s unparalleled civilizational legacy, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) sits at the foot of the Pyramids setting a new milestone in the nation’s proud history.

It is the world’s largest archeological museum occupying 120 acres. It will house approximately 50,000 artifacts, including items from King Tutankhamun’s tomb.

And after years of anticipation, the Grand Egyptian Museum’s inauguration ceremony is set formally on November 1, 2025.

Tourism

The Grand Egyptian Museum is expected to attract around 5 million to 8 million visitors annually. It currently receives between 5,000 to 6,000 daily visitors; that number is expected to triple if not more after the opening.

Tourism is one of Egypt’s economic pillars and thus, the museum is expected to lead to a significant increase in revenue. This is in alignment with the government’s national tourism strategy aiming to attract 30 million visitors by 2028.

In 2024, tourism contributed approximately 8.5% of Egypt’s GDP and GEM is expected to boost this further. This surge is expected to translate into significant economic gains. This is because the increase in tourism will boost spending in hotels, restaurants, transportation and retail, particularly in Giza and Greater Cairo.

The museum will also generate plenty of job opportunities with studies expecting it to provide 500 permanent job opportunities. It is also expected to provide 1500 job opportunities in the service sector. Additionally, it is expected to generate 5,800  opportunities in the museum’s economic projects in the fields of construction, transportation, insurance, services and manufacturing.

Prestige

The museum has been described as a project where infrastructure meets culture. This not only includes core infrastructure and social infrastructure. This includes projects in education, culture, and heritage.

The museum’s opening is revitalizing hotel and real estate markets in Giza, with growing demand for high-end hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has awarded the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) the prestigious EDGE Advanced Green Building Certification.  This recognition makes GEM the first museum in Africa and the Middle East, and among only a few worldwide, to achieve this distinction.
