XChat
What is happening? Elon Musk’s X is rolling out a new chat feature called XChat. It includes encryption described by Elon Musk as “Bitcoin-style,” vanishing messages, and the ability to share any type of file. In addition, audio and video calls are also supported. Musk said the encryption uses a “whole new architecture,” but gave no further technical details.
Who can use it? Right now, XChat is in beta and available to select paid subscribers. According to reports, chats are protected by a four-digit passcode, adding a layer of security. One of the app researchers, Nima Owji, revealed screenshots showing group chats and a vanishing mode that is ready to launch.
Privacy
Why does this matter? Since Musk took over X in 2022, he has pushed to attract more private conversations alongside the usual public posts. Moreover, this move reflects a broader trend in social media toward stronger privacy and security features. Additionally, this change comes as users seek more secure and private ways to communicate online
XChat’s encrypted messaging builds on the encrypted chat feature launched for paid users in May 2023. The platform paused that feature last week to improve it, likely linked to XChat’s debut.
What’s next? Musk has expressed a vision for X to become a super app like China’s WeChat combining chatting, digital banking, and more. This new chat function is part of this strategy to expand X’s services beyond public posts, introducing more private communication tools.
