Google has partnered with Coinbase to enable users to pay for cloud services using Bitcoin, Ether and Dogecoin. The service is launching in early 2023.
The tech giant also plans to explore Coinbase Prime, another custodial service offered by the crypto exchange for storing and trading in cryptocurrencies.
As part of the agreement, Coinbase will be moving some of its data-related applications from Amazon Web Services to Google Cloud.
Amit Zavery, vice president, general manager and head of the platform at Google Cloud, said that at the onset, cryptocurrency payments will be accepted only from a select group of clients who are already active in Web3 via the Coinbase Commerce integration.
Over time, the service will roll out to more customers.
Google’s interest in blockchain is no secret. Over the years, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has invested $1.5 billion in different blockchain companies, including Dapper Labs and Alchemy.
CEO of Google Cloud, Thomas Kurian, added: “We want to make building in Web3 faster and easier, and this partnership with Coinbase helps developers get one step closer to that goal.”
