- Egypt’s four telecom operators are set to launch 5G services in the first half of 2025, enhancing connectivity and digital transformation.
- Telecom Egypt secured Egypt’s first 5G license for USD 150M, followed by Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat in October 2024.
- This rollout is for more than just speed, it aims to enable the application of AI, IoT, and smart cities, fueling Egypt’s digital transformation.
Egypt is officially stepping into the 5G era very soon. This rollout is set to reshape connectivity, fuel innovation, and accelerate digital transformation across the country.
5G
What happened? Minister of Communication and Information Technology Dr Amr Talaat announced that fifth generation (5G) technology will be launched by all four telecom operators in Egypt during the first half of this year.
What are the benefits? Minister Dr Amr Talaat explains that 5G technology offers higher internet speeds and lower latency. This aims to improve user experiences and enable advanced applications such Internet of Things (IoT), AI, and smart cities.
The Minister emphasized that the ministry is working closely with telecom companies to ensure that the infrastructure is ready to accommodate this technology. Furthermore, the goal is to enhance Egypt’s competitiveness in the ICT sector.
Why does this matter? 5G is not just about faster browsing, it is a catalyst for economic growth. Furthermore, the technology aims to enhance the quality of telecommunications services and support digital transformation services across various sectors.
This launch is part of the ICT ministry’s strategy to develop the telecommunications sector and expand digital services. This is in order to contribute to sustainable development goals and create an environment that attracts investments in technology.
Preparation
How did we get here? The first to obtain a 5G license was Telecom Egypt, which acquired it for USD 150 million giving it the right to operate fifth generation services for 15 years. After which, in October 2024, the three major network operators in Egypt, namely Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat also obtained licenses.
However, securing license was just the beginning, In November 2024, Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt signed a USD 609 million infrastructure agreement. This includes deals to prepare Egypt for the launch and rollout of fifth generation technology. Furthermore, these agreements will allow Vodafone to use Telecom Egypt’s extensive infrastructure and fibre optic network.
This agreement was deemed as a cornerstone for the 5G rollout by ICT Minister Dr Amr Talaat. This is because it would allow both companies to work together to deliver enhanced services.
Additionally, at the “5G and Beyond” forum, Minister Dr Talaat noted that over EGP 150 billion has been invested since 2018 to enhance Egypt’s digital infrastructure. This includes the widespread expansion of fiber-optic networks and licensing of 5G services.
In preparation for the rollout, in March 2024, Telecom Egypt signed a partnership with Huawei. Huawei will offer its advanced network solutions such as 5G wireless, 5G service-oriented core and 5G ready transport network. Furthermore, this agreement is to facilitate smooth fifth generation technology adaptation and unlock the full potential of this technology.
