Prime Minister Dr Mostafa Madbouly met with Dr Maya Morsy, Minister of Social Solidarity. This was to review the details of the economic cost assessment for refugees and residents in Egypt.
What was discussed in the meeting? Cabinet Spokesperson Counselor Mr. Mohamed el-Homsani stated that the meeting discussed estimates of the total costs incurred by the state for the care of refugees, migrants and foreign residents. In addition, the discussion also covered the services provided to them across various sectors. This includes the cost of supporting the necessary health infrastructure to offer medical services and other forms of care.
Estimating the Cost
Estimating the Hosting Cost During the meeting, the Minister of Social Solidarity emphasized that the ministry is placing great importance on the refugee, migrant, resident issue. This is due to its significant impact on various economic and social aspects. Furthermore, Dr Morsy pointed out the hosting cost for Egypt’s guests including refugees and migrants is being estimated for several reasons. These reasons include providing valuable insight for decision makers and policy development. Additionally, estimating the cost aids in assessing the social, economic and environmental impacts of refugees and migrants on Egypt. This also informs Egypt’s progress in both national and international indicators. The estimation of the cost also plays a role in guiding the allocation and direction of necessary support for Egypt’s effort in hosting refugees and migrants.
Cooperation with the UN Dr. Maya Morsi also confirmed that there is ongoing cooperation with the United Nations with the goal of assessing the economic cost of refugees and migrants residing in Egypt, which is borne by the Egyptian state. Additionally, there is consensus on the criteria used to calculate these costs among all ministries and government agencies involved.
