Over the last several weeks, Mailchimp email marketing service suspended the accounts of a number of crypto-related individuals and firms. In an email, Mailchimp listed the reason as follows: “We cannot allow businesses involved in the sale, transaction, trading, exchange, storage, marketing, or production of cryptocurrencies, virtual currencies and any digital assets.”

The affected crypto firms include intelligence platform Messari, whose founder Ryan Selkis took to Twitter to air his frustrations, crypto wallet provider Edge, NFT artist Ocarina, Jesse Friedland, the founder of NFT collection Cryptoon ‘Goonz’, and the Support Program account of the Ethereum Foundation.

This is not the first time Mailchimp has banned an account known to transact in digital assets. In 2017, Mailchimp banned DeFi platform ShapeShift.

Although the email marketing service provider has remained silent on the matter, a section of the service’s Acceptable Use Policy offers an explanation behind the suspensions. The section states the prohibition of “cryptocurrencies, virtual currencies, and any digital assets related to an Initial Coin Offering.”
