The Bahrain-based aluminium producer is expanding into Europe with the acquisition of France’s Aluminium Dunkerque, strengthening its position in the global low-carbon metals market.

Bahrain’s Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has agreed to acquire Aluminium Dunkerque, the European Union’s largest aluminium smelter, in a transaction valued at approximately USD 2.2B. The deal marks one of the largest international industrial acquisitions by a Bahraini company and advances Alba’s ambition to build a global low-carbon aluminium platform.

Why You Should Care

The acquisition gives Alba direct access to the European aluminium market at a time when manufacturers across the region are seeking secure supplies of lower-carbon industrial materials. For Bahrain, the transaction extends the reach of one of its largest industrial companies into a strategic European asset, strengthening the kingdom’s position in global manufacturing and industrial supply chains.

The deal also reflects a broader trend of Gulf industrial champions expanding internationally beyond energy and finance, using acquisitions to gain market access, technology capabilities, and global scale.

Aluminium Dunkerque, located in northern France, produces around 300,000 tonnes of aluminium annually and serves customers across Europe. Its advanced automation systems and established industrial infrastructure provide Alba with an operational foothold in one of the world’s most important manufacturing regions.

The transaction will be financed through a consortium of Alba’s banking partners. Upon completion, Alba will acquire full ownership of Aluminium Dunkerque, while France’s public investment bank Bpifrance is expected to invest EUR 100 million for a 6% stake and obtain board representation, subject to regulatory approvals.

The agreement was announced during the Choose France Summit in Paris, underscoring the strategic importance both Bahrain and France place on industrial cooperation and long-term manufacturing investment.

The Ripple

The acquisition could strengthen industrial ties between Bahrain and France while reinforcing Europe’s efforts to maintain domestic aluminium production capacity amid increasing competition from global producers.

For European manufacturers, the transaction introduces a new Gulf-based owner into a critical segment of the continent’s industrial supply chain. For Alba, the deal provides geographic diversification beyond the Middle East and creates opportunities to serve customers closer to end markets in Europe.

The involvement of Bpifrance also signals French government support for maintaining Aluminium Dunkerque as a strategic industrial asset while attracting international capital into the sector.

What to Watch

The next milestone will be the completion of regulatory approvals and financing arrangements required to close the transaction.

Beyond closing, attention will shift to how Alba integrates the French smelter into its broader operations and whether the acquisition becomes the first step in a larger international expansion strategy. As demand for low-carbon aluminium grows across automotive, aerospace, packaging, and renewable energy sectors, Alba will be positioned with manufacturing capacity spanning both the Gulf and Europe.

The deal could also serve as a blueprint for future cross-border industrial acquisitions by Gulf companies seeking greater influence in global supply chains.
