What happened? Dalia El Gabry, President of Shell Egypt, multinational oil and gas company,  announced in an interview with Alarabiya Business that Shell is investing USD 300 million in collaboration with Petronas for ongoing drilling activities. These ongoing drilling activities are within Phase 11 of the West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) concession. This phase includes drilling three new gas wells aiming to develop an additional 90 billion cubic feet of gas connecting these wells to the existing subsea infrastructure.

Shell has begun drilling operations and is expected to start production from the first well in 2025.

Why now? Shell is working towards expanding its offshore exploration footprint in Egypt.  The company recently drilled the West Mena exploratory well in the North East Amriya area, and it’s now working on accelerating development plans.

The company is now looking ahead to 2025, focusing on deepwater gas production and exploring nearby regions.

What’s next? Shell is preparing for new exploratory drilling by 2026 in the Mediterranean, covering areas from the Nile Delta to the Herodotus Basin. It is also conducting a 4D seismic survey in its West Delta concession to assess the remaining recoverable gas potential.

Shell is also collaborating with EGAS and Petronas to develop a unified energy system for its West Delta operations. This initiative aligns with Egypt’s goals of improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.

Why does this matter? With these initiatives, Shell aims to reinforce its commitment to boosting gas production and supporting Egypt’s growing domestic demand. This is  despite fluctuations in production levels due to field development cycles. The CEO further emphasized Shell’s goal to play a role in Egypt’s strategy to solidify its position as a key regional energy player.
