ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in May for a service called “TikTok Music.”

First spotted by Business Insider, the filing indicates that the trademark could be applied to a mobile app that would allow users to purchase, play, share and download music.

TikTok’s possible foray into the music world is not surprising, as a report released by the company last year shows that 175 songs that trended on the short-video platform ended up on the Billboard 100 chart. Another recent report published by a U.K.-based music investor discovered that songs that are popular on TikTok drive additional streams on other platforms, such as YouTube and Spotify.

Although TikTok’s parent company ByteDance operates a music streaming service called Resso in India, Brazil and Indonesia, TikTok currently has no way of monetizing the music being streamed on its service in the U.S. and European markets.

A former ByteDance employee told TechCrunch that the company had previously considered launching Resso in various global markets such as the U.K. and Australia under the “TikTok Music” moniker. According to a SensorTower report, the company, which has 184 million lifetime downloads, saw 42.3 million downloads from the App Store and Google Play from January to May this year, recording 19% growth year over year for the same period.

In the trademark filing, Bytedance lists numerous use cases for “TikTok Music”, including the option to livestream audio and video, “edit and upload photographs as playlist covers”, allow users to leave comments on songs and albums, “livestream audio and video interactive media programming in the field of entertainment, fashion, sports, and current events”, and “provide users with podcast and radio broadcast content.”

A few months ago, the company launched its own music marketing and distribution platform, SoundOn, allowing artists to upload their music directly to TikTok and Resso, in addition to global streaming platforms including Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Deezer and Tencent’s Joox. If “TikTok Music” takes flight, SoundOn could help it deliver a comprehensive solution for listeners and artists in the U.S. market.
