As outlined in the latest meeting held by the Ethereum Foundation, the developers are looking into the possibility of including EIP-4844, also known as “proto-danksharding,” to the Shanghai update.

This comes shortly after Ethereum developers decided on the main eight Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) to be included in the next major upgrade.

Sharding is a practice where the Ethereum network is split into multiple portions, called ‘shards’, to enhance network performance and scalability.

Because each shard is its own independent state, containing a unique set of account balances and smart contracts, this scaling solution enables the network to process each transaction on its own, instead of all of them at once.

The developers explained that they will be testing out EIP-4844, along with the eight other proposals on developer networks (devnets), but there is still no hard guarantee that they will be included in the Shanghai update.
