Earlier this week, WhatsApp announced its first original short film, “Naija Odyssey,” which follows the personal journey of NBA player Giannis Antetokounmpo from his humble Nigerian-Greek origins to international basketball fame.

The NBA star recently signed a long-term endorsement deal with WhatsApp, another first for the Meta-owned company.

In a statement to Variety, Vivian Odior, WhatsApp’s global head of marketing, explained: “‘Naija Odyssey’ is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives. In navigating relationships, identity, and even adversity, WhatsApp is there — enabling you to embrace all sides of you by connecting you to those who matter most.”

The 12-minute movie will be released on WhatsApp’s social media accounts, including its YouTube channel, and will premiere on Prime Video on September 21st.
