Oman has officially completed its National Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy, marking a significant advancement toward fostering innovation and safeguarding intellectual property rights in the country.
The strategy was unveiled by Nasra bint Sultan al Habsi, Director General of Commerce at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, during the National Intellectual Property Exhibition.
Aligned with Oman Vision 2040
The new IP strategy was developed in collaboration with a national team representing key stakeholders. The strategy is aligned with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040under the human and society development stream.
It is designed to promote economic growth, innovation, and IP awareness across various sectors in Oman.
Four Pillars of IP Strategy
The National IP Strategy is structured around four primary pillars:
IP Management: Strengthens the institutional framework for managing intellectual property.
IP Assets: Focuses on increasing the economic value derived from national intellectual property.
Law Modernization: Aims to update and streamline regulations governing intellectual property.
Education and Awareness: Emphasizes public education, training, and raising awareness about IP rights.
The strategy includes 14 key initiatives, notably the accreditation of Oman’s National IP Office as a patent examination body by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
This accreditation is expected to boost Oman’s global standing and attract further investment into IP assets.
Embracing Technology for IP Management
Another major initiative involves the creation of an advanced electronic platform for IP management.
The platform will leverage technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital archiving to streamline IP processes and enhance enforcement efforts across the country.
